1. Prepositional phrase:
The book on the bathroom floor is swollen from shower steam.
"On" là preposition. "On the bathroom floor" bổ nghĩa cho danh từ "the book" về không gian(trạng ngữ chỉ thời gian). "from the shower steam" ko bổ nghĩa cho cuốn sách mà bổ nghĩa cho "is swollen."

2. Adjective phrase:
She likes that red rose.
Tính từ "red" bổ nghĩa cho danh từ "rose" tạo thành cụm tính từ.

3. Adverbial phrase:
I have to finish a 5 pages essay before Friday.
"Before Friday" bổ nghĩa cho động từ "finish". Tất cả cái gì bổ nghĩa cho động từ mà nhiều hơn 1 từ thì gọi là "adverbial phrase". Như ở phần 2 thì "from shower steam" là adverbial phrase.

4. Infinitive phrase:
To answer TLT's question, I need to do some Internet researches.
hoặc có thể viết lại:
I need to do some Internet researches to answer TLT's question.
Infinitive phrase có thể là bổ nghĩa cho động từ, có thể là tính từ và cũng có thể là danh từ. Infinitive phrase bắt đầu bằng "to" sau đó là động từ.

5. Embedded phrase:
George Bush, the 41st President of the United States, is hated, because he spent too much money and lives in Iraq War for nothing, by Americans.
"The 41st president of the United States" là thông tin đuợc cho vào để nói cho nguời đọc biết George Bush là ai.
"Because he spent too much money and lives in Iraq War for nothing" cho vào để ngừoi đọc biết tại sao ngừoi Mỹ lại ghét George Bush.

Embedded phrase dùng để cho thông tin vào câu văn và 1 cách màu mè làm cho câu văn có vẻ lạ hơn. Đôi khi làm cho ngừoi đọc bị rối. Như ví dụ trên có thể viết lại là.

George Bush, the 41st president of the United States, is hated by Americans because he spent too much money and lives in Iraq War for nothing.

Câu này sau khi sửa thì chỉ còn 1 embedded phrase.
