I've always been interested in vietnamese translations with other lânguges. Recently Íve been caught up with mobile headings on phones. Cellphones r gettin popular in Vietnam nowadays, and they too have Vietnamese headings for their mobiles instead of just "borrowing" words directly from the English vocabularies.

Hêre are some of my researches on the topic
menu = trương trình
message = tin nhắn
recent calls = cuộc gọi gần đây
dialed calls = cuộc gọi đã bấm
received calls = cuộc gọi đã nhận
data information = thông tin dữ kiện
call duration = (khỏang) thời gian cuộc gọi
delete = xóa
audio = âm thanh
display = trưng bày
security = cơ quan bảo vệ
connection = mạch liên lạc
address/phone book = sổ điện thoại
contacts = người tiếp xúc
caller group = nhóm người tiếp xúc
my stuff = vật liệu riêng tư

but there're also some that just can't get a satisfying translation for it, such as
missed calls = ? (I came up with, cuộc gọi lỡ and heard
some people referred to it as cuộc gọi nhỡ, but
they still hadn't hit the spot)
instant messenger = ?



Any of you have any ideas?

Any of you have any ideas?

That's very good. I have a few suggestions for some revisions:

Menu: bảng chọn/ danh mục instead of chương trình (program)
Camera: máy hình instead of chụp hình
Settings: thiết lập instead of dàn xếp
Instant messaging: gởi thư tín cấp kỳ

Missed calls: 1) cuộc gọi bỏ lỡ 2) cuộc gọi không tiếp (technically, if a call goes unanswered it would be a missed call)

Here are some more terms if you or anyone else feels like translating:

wow, all of your suggestions are great. Especially the "missed calls" part. That's exactly what it is - "cuộc gọi bõ lỡ". lol. Where'd you get all these translations from, an actual phone from Vietnam?

Ps. I think "toolbox" is kind of like "tool" (dụng cụ), otherwise you can call it, "hộp dụng cu."

ye...search for "free unikey" on google, that's how I got ịt

Ps. I don't think "applications" means "phần mêm". On the flip side, "bản số tốc hành" is perfect for "speed dial"!

oops, my bad...you might need unikey for other use, but here, I think it's already installed, so all you have to do is use the number keys above the letter keys, for "dấu"

the reason I said application = phần miền because application in this case implied to the tool developed by software/programing.

Yukotesnow and bangoc08, I am impressed with your translations. I have not seen any Vietnamese phones so I don't know what terms they use. I would tend to agree with bangoc08 regarding the translation "phần mềm" for Applications. Maybe, i would use, Applications = trình ứng dụng.

Here's an interesting note on the term "Software" that I read about. Originally, the definition or correct translation for "Software" is supposed to be "nhu liệu điện toán". One day some tech engineer guy cracked a joke and said he worked with "phần mềm" or "software" and the term stuck and has been used every since because it is shorter and easier to remember than "nhu liệu điện toán". From there they came up with "phần cứng" for hardware. This serves as proof for the kind of language distortions that occur all the time for the sake of convenience. Something that was said in jest is now accepted language and it's not even correct usage.

bangoc08, I contacted a friend of mine who has a mobile phone with Vietnamese language on it. Some of the words are funny in a strange way. so if you want to know anything else let me know. They did use "cuộc gọi nhỡ" for missed calls.

carolton67, you sound like you don't live in vietnam but I admire that your vietnamese is very well. I live in vietnam but I don't think I could write vietnamese as well as you
