The sentences are using English idioms so I will translate into plain English.
"He moved about uncomfortably and pursed his lips in annoyance" Pursed lips = moi mim lai
A hand-me-down is an item of clothing that has been owned by an older member of the family. Hence, it is 'handed down'. This is because it is cheaper than buying a new item.
