Lesson 1

Present continuous

Minh is in his car. He is on his way to work.
He is driving to work.

Có nghĩa là bây giờ anh ta đang lái xe, ngay thời điểm đang nói. Hành động lái xe vẫn đang tiếp diễn.

Am/ is /are verb+ing

I am driving.
He/she/it is working.
We you are doing.

I am doing something = I am in the middle of doing something; I have started it and I haven't finished.

Eg. Please don't make so much noise. I am working ( not " I work ")

Present continuous có thể diễn ta hành động không nhất thiết là đang xảy ra hiện tại. Ví dụ:

Minh and Kim are talking in a cafe. Minh says:
- I am reading a interesting book at the moment, I will lend it to you when I have finished.

Minh không đang đọc cuốn sách vào thời điểm nói chuyện với Kim, ý của Minh là đã bắt đầu và chưa đọc xong. He is in the middle of reading it.

Example:
-Binh wants to work in China, so he is learning chinese. (but perhaps he isn't learning Chinese exactly at the time of speaking)

We use present continuous when we talk about things happening in a period around now.

Examples :

-You're working hard today. ( not "you work hard today")
- Is Huong working this week?

We use present continuous when we talk about changes happening around now.

Example:
- The population of the world is rising very fast. (not "rises")
- Is your English getting better? ( not "does your English get better?")

Lesson 2

Present simple

Minh is a chef, but now he is having a shower. He is not cooking, but he cooks.

Cook(s), swim(s), go(es) is the present simple.

I/we/you/they cook/swim/go

He/she/it cooks/swim/goes

Chúng ta dùng thì present simple để nói về chuyện chung chung. Present simple dùng để diễn ta hành động luôn xảy ra hoặc hành động tái diễn thường xuyên hay là nói lên sự thật:

eg.
- I always cook at weekends.
- The sun rises in the east and set in the west.

Khi đặt câu hỏi chúng ta dùng trợ động từ (auxiliary verb) do/does, và trong thể phủ định chúng ta dùng don't/doesn't.
eg.

Do I/we/you/they cook? I/we/you/they don't cook.
Does he/she/it swim? He/she/it doesn't swim.

Chúng ta dùng thì simple present để diễn tả thoái quen hàng ngày của mình hoặc chuyện xảy ra theo chu kỳ.
eg.
-I wake up at 6 am every morning.
-How often do you clean your house?

Xin nhấn mạnh ở đây do cũng có thể là động từ chính mà không fải là trợ động từ.

eg.
-What do you do ?
-He is lucky, he doesn't do anything. His wife does everything for him.
