Why do we need a referee?

But isn't 'referee' in a broader sense also used to denote a person whose opinion is valuable in some situations, i.e. where things have become unclear? As in the above example, an authority on (English) language issues?

But there was not anything unclear in those translations. People understand what needs to be translated and they did their best. Because there are more than one way to translate that message, what is the use of a referee ?

Another thing, using a referee in a post like this will make some people think there is only one way to translate that post. This will mislead people that English translation is absolute, and not relative with flexibility.

The decisions of referees are usually binding and I would't like to see my status rise to such a lofty level. Arbitrator might be a better description but other English (L1) speakers may disagree with me. And so, whilst I am happy to contribute, I won't arbitrate either. I am happy that you value my opinion.

If there is a word for word translation, there can be little room for dispute, but where this is not possible the spirit of the original text is what counts. Translations between Vietnamese and English can be very difficult particularly because English has intonations (gịong điệu) and Vietnamese doesn't.

    Vui ve!

Thất bại lớn nhất của đời người là tự đại
Đáng thương nhất của đời người là tự ti.
Tự đại + Tự ti = thất bại đáng thương nhất
