Hi everyone. I am an American born Vietnamese college student. Growing up I spoke English at home, so my Vietnamese sucks. I am trying to learn it. I go to this Vietnamese school for kids (lớp 3 trong 10) one day a week and try to speak, read, and listen to Vietnamese whenever I can.

I can speak and understand most simple terms, but when I watch Vietnamese TV shows or news or church services, I am completely lost .

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can most quickly pick it up? I am actually going to Vietnam this March on a school trip so I'd like to be able to communicate alright.

Tiếng Việt (có thễ có nhiều quá sai...):

Chào mọi người. Em là người Viet sống ở USA (Texas). Khi em đã lớn lên, ba má em nói chỉ tiéng An với em. Nên tiéng Việt em rất là dỡ. Em đang gắng học tiéng Việt. Em đang học lớp tiéng Việt cho đứa (lớp 3 trong 10) một lờn một tuần và em gắng nói, đọc, và nghe tiéng Việt lúc nào được.
Em được nói và hiểu từ dễ hiểu nhưng mà néu em coi máy buổi chiếu phim Việt, buổi lễ nhà thờ Việt, hay tin tức Việt em không dược hiểu.

Có ai đây có gợi ý cho em cho học tiếng Việt nhanh nhất? Em sẽ đi thăm Việtnam tháng 3 với một trong những lớp em và muón có thễ truyền đủ.

I need try more in practise Vietnamese, especially in writting.
By the way, don't say "chào các người!" It sounds arrogant, rude.__ "Chào mọi người" or "Chào các bạn" sounds more popular

Ah arrogant is bad! Thanks, I will change that. I am gonna try to add a Vietnamese version of my original post too for practice and so people who are better at Vietnamese to understand.

I am very favorably impressed with what your doing. I can't help you any (you are way ahead of me and have advantage of youth) but I cheer you on! I went to the Ban Thanh market several times in April 2008 and bought some fun stuff which I have here now. My rechargeable mosquito bat has since gone bad but i had a lot of use of it. I bought a lot of things like handtools (i am a radio technician sometimes) and had fun doing it even though my friends said I bought too much. I loved the fruits over there too and all the different canned drinks plus including 333 Beer my friend wanted me to try.
