Chileans evacuated as volcano erupts

SANTIAGO, Chile – Authorities evacuated hundreds of people from villages in southern Chile yesterday after a snowcapped volcano considered dormant for thousands of years erupted.

The 3,550-foot Chaiten volcano belched fire and ash Thursday night, causing more than 60 small tremors in the Los Lagos region, 750 miles south of Santiago, officials said.

Volcanic ash falls on deserted village

CHAITEN, Chile – The Chaiten volcano spewed light ash on a nearly deserted village yesterday, two days after its first eruption in thousands of years.

No more than 45 of Chaiten's 4,500 residents remained in what looked like a ghost town, its streets, houses, cars and trees draped with a thick layer of light-colored ash, Interior Minister Edmundo Perez said.

Those who decided to stay after Thursday's eruption could be seen wearing masks outdoors in Chaiten, 750 miles south of the capital, Santiago. Streetlights were illuminated under darkened skies.

Six miles away, the volcano belched fat smoke plumes that at times rose as high as 12 miles into the air.

Winds carried the ash across the Andes Mountains to Argentina, where two airlines suspended flights due to poor visibility.

CAIRO, Egypt – One of Osama bin Laden's sons has been denied British residency because London authorities believe his presence in the country would cause “considerable public concern,” the man's wife said yesterday.

Advertisement Omar Osama bin Laden, a 27-year-old metals trader, had hoped to live in Britain with his British-born wife. The couple live in Cairo, but she is eager to return to her country, where she has a home.
Omar's wife, Zaina Alsabah, 52, said his residency application was rejected. She showed a statement from the couple's legal firm quoting a British consular officer who said his residency in Britain would not be “conducive to the public good.”

“I note that statements made during recent media interviews indicate evidence of continuing loyalty to your father who is ultimately held responsible for the London bombing,” the unnamed British official was quoted as writing. He was referring to suicide attacks on July 7, 2005, that killed 52 people.

Omar has not renounced his father, but says he wants to be an “ambassador for peace” between Muslims and the West.

Omar – one of bin Laden's 19 children – married Alsabah last year. She was previously known as Jane Felix-Browne.
