Please correct me if i'm wrong.
I think "farewell" has more usage than "so long".
For example, it's ok to say "she said her farewell.", but it's not ok to say "she said her so long."
I also think "so long" normally used at the begining of a phrase.
fare⋅well*
–interjection 1. goodby; may you fare well: Farewell, and may we meet again in happier times.
–noun 2. an expression of good wishes at parting: They made their farewells and left.
so long
–noun Informal. good-bye: I said so long and left
Good-bye, as in So long, we'll see you next week. The allusion here is puzzling; long presumably means "a long time" and perhaps the sense is "until we meet again after a long time," but the usage has no such implication. [Colloquial; first half of 1800s]
Manh Nguyen, thanks for the infor., from this i would conclude:
farewell: does not bring the expectation of seeing the person again, rather than that it is merely a goodbye.
so long: on the hand, implies the the hope to meet that person somewhere in the future.
therefore their implication are not necessarily the same.
if there is a confirmation from a native speaker that would be great.

1st Version:
Anyone who teaches me one word - even half a word - is still my teacher.
2nd Version:
Even he who teaches me the smallest bit can still be called my teacher
Please correct my grammar as you see fit. Much appreciated!
1. Farewell
2. So long
3. See you later
4. Seeya
5. Bye
6. Later
All have the same meaning, mostly used when speaking with someone you know well for example a good friend or family member or relative.
Farewell - when said in parting can also mean: 'be well' 'remain well'
until we meet again
Goodbye
This would be used in a formal parting.
Hope this is useful
cheers Jackie
Ditto!
