Default Football fans! Please explain to me what this means.

Then again, sledgehammer shooting doesn’t mean a thing if you’re hitting the stands instead of the stanchion. When Rooney puts his foot through the ball, you can put away your measuring tape and track his distribution in blades of grass, not metres.

No need to translate, just kindly help me to get the meaning of the texts in bold.

    Thank you million times,

    Phong Lan

He means that hitting the ball hard means nothing unless you hit the target. However, the first sentence does not make logical sense. If you hit the stands or the stanchion you have not scored a goal. So as we say in English 'a miss is a good as mile'

The 'Stands' is an old expression meaning the part of stadium where people used to stand when they attended football matches. Stadiums now have seats but the expression persists. The stanchion is the part of the goal where the upright and the crossbar connect.

The second sentence is more complex but it means this. A measuring tape does not have the degree of precision necessary to meaure the accuracy of Wayne Rooney's passing ability. A blade of grass being very narrow.

    I hope that helps!

    Regards

    Richard

If you are hitting the stands then you are way off your mark..not very accurate as the stands are very far away...

Put away the measuring tape means it doesn't help and better to see how hard he kicks ..

    Smile Thanks

Thanks Richard and Dewdrops for your efforts on helping me. This kind of English text really drives me crazy, but you have just done a great job!!!

There is just one thing I need to make sure:
"you can put away your measuring tape and track his distribution in blades of grass" => his distribution can be understood as "Wayne Rooney's passing ability/passes"? Thanks again.

    Distribution:
    placement, location, arrangement, or disposition:
Example: The distribution of our troops is a military secret.

Phong Lan to see how hard he kicks you do not need a measuring tape..rather easier way to tell is to see the blades of grass to work out how hard he kicks..and that way can tell where it will land
