    Wow. What a headache.
I hope you guys arnt spending too much time trying to figure this one out.

Here are the answers from a well spoken native english speaker (me)..

1 He won £100 and gave it all away

2 Put ??? the clock, it is twenty minutes fast.
    - Huh? This should say Turn back the clock. If you said "Put the clock back twenty minutes", it would be understood. But "Put back the clock" means "Return the clock"

3 Riding is getting too expensive; I'll have to give it up

4 I'll put off my visit to the Royal Mint till you can come with me.
    - better to say "I'll postpone my visit"

5 The roads were crowded with people making their way up the coast.
    - No single word fits here.

6 He gave back all the books he had borrowed.

7 She had invited me to dinner but had to put me off as she was taken ill.
    - Awkward English. better to say "had to cancel"

8 I can't make out the postmark on the letter; it looks like Basingstoke.

9 Put out the light it's getting quite light again.
    - better to say "Turn off the light"

10 After four days of freedom, the escaped prisoner gave himself up to the police.

11 That vase is very valuable. Put it down before you drop it.

12 She makes love very skilfully. She looks much younger than she is.

13 Your secret is safe with me. I won't give you away. (betray you)

14 He was very much put off when she rang off angrily in the middle of their conversation.
    - People dont "rang off",. perhaps she "ran off"?

15 It's time they made up that silly quarrel.
    - Incorrect. You dont "make up a quarrel." You "make up" after a quarrel.

16 I wish you would put away the dishes instead of leaving them on the table.

17 He's not really angry. He's only putting it ???
    - He's "putting you on," (joking) or better yet, "putting on an act" (faking)

18 He didn't want to go to the cinema but they begged so hard that he gave up and went with them.

19 I don't believe that story. I am sure you made it up

20 The house itself is quite attractive but the fact that it's near a busy airport put me off.
    - Being "put off," as in "unhappy with," is acceptable but not a common useage.

21 The boy is hyperactive. I put it ??? wrong diet.
-I'm really not sure what to do with this one.

22 They put up a statue of Florence Nightingale after her death.

23 The diver's supply of oxygen gave out and he had to be brought to the surface as quickly as possible.

24 I asked him to put out the lights if he was the last to leave.
    - Again, you dont put out lights. You turn off lights.

25 I don't know how you put up with the noise; it would drive me mad

26 After his fourth attempt he gave up trying to pass the driving test.

27 Here's a crash helmet. Put it on

28 He should try to make up for his loss of sleep by going to bed early.

29 If you can't find a room in a hotel, I could always put you up

30 The names of the winners were given out on the radio.

31 The shortage of eggs has put up their price considerably.
    - Prices are pushed up, or increased. Put up does not show an increase.

32 The government put down the rebellion with great severity.

33 If you want to save money, give up eating in expensive restaurants.

34 This clock is always slow; I put it back ten minutes every morning.
    - Again, much better to say "turn it back."

35 There was a man giving out leaflets outside the church.

36 He put down his name for the excursion
