I now just think of another word I have seen. "thu" for try. "xem thu", "uong thu", "nge thu" is that like the same way?

Yes, in Vietnam, we have a lot of compound words and that is one of the ways to have compound word.
About the word "thử", as you know "thử" means "try something to know whether the result is good or not, before coming to the last decision" and your examples are very correct. I think that you "thấy" them before, right?
I think they are the same way, but the word "thử" is more dynamic than, we can also say "thử uống" instead of "uống thử", "thử nghe" instead of "nghe thử" and it can combine with a lot of verbs, ex: chơi thử, nếm thử...
