yes definitely, just like you said!
    Yes it's wrong!
    Yeah just like that!:
    eek:

(trying to get a Viet to say dạ can be so hard sometimes? )

It depends on who you talk to. If you talk to a person who is much older, don't expect dạ. You talk to a little kid, most likely you will get a dạ.

That is probably about the hesitation point I'm looking at, thanks!

It's an absolute killer when you can't get a simple "fine just go that way"
I always expect a "dạ phải đi" but rarely get anything like it.

Maybe I need a translation for; "can I get your assurance we can continue without problem?"

(I can't seem to figure an agreement stance from most Viet people)

    How about :

Anh có bảo đảm là mọi chuyện sẽ êm đẹp không ?
[can] you assure/guarantee that everything will be all right/smooth?

I don't know what you mean. You mean like a Russian nodding their heads means no ?

I know what you mean, it confused me sometimes too, even though I'm a Vietnamese, so don't feel bad if you have to ask them again for affirmation. Usually when they say 'yes' they mean that what you say is correct.
So if a guy ask you:
    _ Can't you ride a horse?
The answer 'yes' means that "you can't ride a horse" is true, which means the opposite of "yes, I can ride a horse". 'Yes' could be "phải", "ừ", "dạ", "vâng", "đúng" ...

I always have trouble answering the "do you mind" question in English. When somebody ask me: Do you mind if I sit here? I would answer them: "yes" and then 1.50 seconds later added "you can sit, I don't mind".

    pertussis Not in VDICT

Diphtheria VDICT uses Diptheria and translates as bệnh bạch hầu. Tự Ðiển Nguyễn Văn Tạo dịch là bệnh về yết hầu.

Also, the word nhửng does not appear and I quite understand why. Not many people know that word but in the rural regions especially of the Mekong Delta, this word nhửng means something like the state of a body of water at low or at high tide. Something like that, or maybe the body of water between tides, I should ask some elders.
