An "open house" is a kind of party usually held to celebrate the completion of high school or college by the graduate. Open houses are very popular in the United States. They are especially popular in parts of the country where graduation of high school is considered to be an extraordinary accomplishment, as opposed to a minor, trivial accomplishment. In areas where the completion of high school is not considered extraordinary, many graduates celebrate with a handshake and a dinner at home with their parents. Open houses typically take place in May through July, while most school graduations are taking place. It is not uncommon for attendees to have to attend more than one open house per day.
