Thank you for your comment. I don't know why we don't use "+ly" as you said. I need to ask because I am still learning English. I think everyone use that in the letters, mails, documents... If you don't want to tell me the reason, that is find but can you please tell me the word that I should use to replace that word? I appreciate that. Another thing, I wonder if the English you speak in Canada and the English I use in US, which they call American, are the same? Maybe they don't use those words over there, but they use those words here? I need to do more research on this.

What do you mean by "black thing in my eyes"? Please explain to me and next time you reply or give a comment, please say something clearly so I and everyone can understand, you are just like "half open half close" so nobody can understand what you mean. I am an american and I am trying to learn vietnamese. I recently started dating a girl from vietnam and I want to learn vietnamese to be able to speak to her family. She has been in the united states for 5 years but still struggles with english a little. I use this website to help me with certain words I am unsure of using my rosetta stone program. Sometimes I cant figure out what the pictures actually mean.
One of the most difficult things for me and learning the language is the difficulty getting my mouth to make the right sounds. My girlfriend has the same problems when trying to speak english. The other difficult part is with all the accents over the letters. Sometimes i get confused where they are supposed to go when spelling words. I just started studying about 1 month ago, so I am sure it will get easier over time.
The only other problem i have run into is the difference between the north dialect and the souther dialect. The program i have uses the northern dialect and some of the words are different than the ones in the south. One example would be that of the word socks, my girlfriend said they are different words for the north and the south.
Anyway, I am really happy this website is here because it has been a big help for both her and I.

Uhmm, i happened to have the rosetta stone and ya, they do use the north dialect, which kinda annoying since i'm from the south . From my experience with the program, it's kinda old, even for the newest version ( i have the 2006 with 10 languages which i use to learn Korean and Japanese). If you wanna communicate with your gf's family and they are from the south, the best way is to ask her, not the program, since most of the Vietnamese teaching programs are dominated by the north accent, which is no good for your purpose.
As for her studying in English, i think one of the best resource is thesaurus dictionary of Microsoft Encarta, totally awesome, one of the best way to broaden her vocab. It's my no.1 choice for essay writing .
Anyway, i'm happy to have people from other countries who are interested in Vnese :P

Dear mate, i just happen to pass by and see those bold words. I am living in Canada, and as a high school student, i am forbidden to use the word FIRSTLY, or any ordered words with +ly. Don't ask me the reason, lol, it's just not allowed to use. I once ask and my teacher said that Firstly or such only used in England, and very formal. To an extent, it's like Shakespearian language .
And yeah, Nobody uses Pupil now, unless you mean the black thing in your eyes .

Thank you for your correction. I just came to US for 2 years and I am still learning English. I am a high school student. When I was in Vietnam, I studied the English (maybe old English), but the English in US is American and it is new, model English. I still see people using "firstly" in documents so that I use it. But I won't use that anymore because I know it is not suitable nowadays Hope to learn something from you. Thanks again!

First of all, I'm a Vietnamese living in Australia. I started leaning English about 15 years ago. Although I have been in Australia for over 11 years, done a uni degree and worked among English speaking people every day, I find I still need a dictionary, be it online or physical. So TCX, don't you be discouraged when making a mistake. That's the way to learn. I have worked and learned alongside many native speakers and I know for a fact that many of them are worse than us, especially when it comes to writing. English is a great language to know. It's almost universal.

Anyway, I'd like to say a few words on the topic here:

1. vdict.com is great resource when you need a definition. The other places I find useful are www.google.com, wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn, www.doubletongued.org and www.urbandictionary.com. To look up a word at www.google.com, you type in "define:" followed by the word to look up. For instance, to look up "firstly", you type "define:firstly". www.doubletongued.org and www.urbandictionary.com are slang dictionaries.

2. "Firstly" and "secondly" are not a problem here in Australia, although they're not very popular. Also, you almost never go past "thirdly".
