Why did you pick up the phone without speaking a word?
I think "without saying a word" is more common than "speaking (or talking) a word".
Recently someone asked me to help differentiate between "say, tell, speak, and talk." Below was my response. Feel free to make comments & suggestions.

Tell & Say
tell a story: kể chuyện
tell on someone: nói lén, thèo lẻo, trình báo về ai
“say” thường dùng để đề cập đến chính lời nói (trực tiếp hay gián tiếp)
he says: “we need to tell a story calm her down.”
please say a few words to calm her down.
Talk & Speak are very close and can mostly be interchangeable (dùng thay đổi nhau), but there are important differences.
speak có nghĩa trịnh trọng (formal) hơn talk, và thường dùng cho trường hợp đứng nói với một số đông, nói trước công chúng, như diễn văn.
he speaks to a new audience
he speaks well in public
he speaks highly of you
he speaks fluent English
talk thì thường là nói với nhau, giữa những người với nhau, có nghĩa thân mật hơn speak
they talk to one another
talk to him and find out what’s wrong (nói với nó coi bị cái gì vậy)
he talks well: ông ta nói chuyện hay (có duyên, làm người ta thích)
he speaks well: ông ta ăn nói hay (trình bày hay, dùng từ chính xác, người nghe nể)
talk to me: nói với tôi (nói cho tôi biết)
speak to me: nói với tôi (trình bày cho tôi xem)
