    Default VN language

    Hi,
    I am English living in Vietnam and desperately trying to learn the language. I am trying to create flashcards using Microsoft Publisher 2007 which is reasonably successful. Cards are printed in Arial MT Rounded Bold and after much searching to find a manual in English can type the diacritics for Vietnamese in MS Word but this does not work in a previously created version within Publisher. The keyboard is set for Vietnamese. Can anyone help please I am struggling enough with the language, flashcards are slowly working?

    click "unikey" or "Vietkey" on the screen. and choose one kind of type Telex or Vni.
    also, at the right corner, click "E" to change it into "V", then you can type Vietnamese language.
    This is the way to type the diacritics:
    "â" => type "aa"
    "ă": aw
    "ả": ar
    "á": as
    "à":af
    "ạ": aj
    "ã": ax
    i wish those will be useful for you!

    Thank you for the advice. I do have Unikey originally set for Vni which worked but does no longer and have now tried Telex which does not work either. I have keyboard switch English/Vietnamese in Windows 7 and have tried both Vn fonts and others with no success on previously created documents or new in both Word and Publisher. I will now resort to adding the diacritics by hand as I am spending more time trying to create flashcards than actually using them. Thank you again.

    Cool

    Hi Thorrun,
    If you wish to type Vietnamese using Unikey, you should use VNI typing mode, which is much easier as for me. Two other friends who have given you some hints showed you how to type Vietnamese with Telex mode. The VNI mode is as follows:

    á = a1 à = a2 ả = a3 ã = a4 ạ = a5 â = a6 ă = a8 ê = e6. In other words, 1 for high rising 'dấu sắc', 2 for low falling 'dấu huyền' 3 low rising 'dấu hỏi' 4 high broketn 'dấu hỏi' and 5 low broken 'dấu nặng'

    đ = d9 ư = u7 ơ = o7

    With these basic combinations, you can type any words you wish: đường 'sugar, road, street' = d9uo7ng2, nguyễn = nguye64n

    Hoping these hints can help you out.

    Best regards,

    Duy Nguyen

    P.S. Remember to click on Expand when you open the Unikey, select the second check box for OÀ UÝ instead of ÒA ÚY. The former rule of adding diacritical marks is more correct, linguistically. The latter rule is labeled as 'aesthetic mode', just for fun.

    Thank you Duy I appreciate your help and will make another attempt at it using your guide. I now suspect that the problem may be with Microsoft Publisher and the need to set the language within the program.

    Hi Thorrun,
    In my office, we use Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel and Power Point a lot and we always have them in four languages: English (of course), Vietnamese, Spanish and Korean. All files using Unkey to type Vietnamese work perfectly. Try it, you will like it. Oops! You have to realize that the Unikey does not have the updated version for Windows 7 or newer. I am sure it works fine on Vista and XP.

    Happ Tết.
