It is a degrading/racist term to call American Born Chinese. Don't use it.

    Here is my take:
American-born Chinese is a person born in the USA that has strong influence of Chinese background. [Google it]
I don’t think there is anything derogatory about it. Being called a “chink”, is derogatory.

Thanks guys for the input. I didn't know of that.

But what i'm really asking here is the Vietnamese abbreviation, not English.

I know for a fact that the ABC call Chinese born Chinese FOB (fresh of the boat), and the FOB call the other ABC. Both are used as degradatory terms.

    It could be:

ABC's**/ˈeɪˌbiˈsiz/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [ey-bee-seez] Show IPA
–noun (used with a plural verb) 1. Also, ABC. the alphabet.
    2. the basic skills of spelling, reading, and writing: learning the ABC's in the early grades of school.
ABC = ignorant (dot nat.) in Vietnamse!!!

Ok, finally I found somewhere in another Vietnamese forum and ABC actually means money.

Có ai có ý kiến khác không? Mình thấy từ ABC này có nhiều nghĩa quá, mỗi người hiểu một khác.

    OK Mr Paddy,
You're right, by calling someone "FOB", in someway you're saying that they are a newbie, an immigrant, inferior than you, in lessen value, etc.., for that one would considesr that a derogatory comment.
But calling someone an: American-Born Chinese, American-Born Vietnamese, American-Born Italian, or American-Born Irish, doesn't sound degrading at all, in my opinion.

i suggest that you should not waste your time to explain it in English. This phrase means DOING BAD THING in Vietnamese meaning, for example: bribery... That's all
Vô tình đánh rớt hạt yêu
Để giờ đi kiếm bao chiều hư vô...
