To be perfectly honest, you will need to have very strong motivation and lots of people which you can practice with.

My motivation came from, well, my girlfriend whom only speaks Vietnamese, as well as from work. I work in a Vietnamese company and being the only non-Vietnamese in the company, I had lots of opportunities to use my Vietnamese daily.

Coming from a native Mandarin speaking family also helps.

I also find knowing to write and read Vietnamese will increase the rate of your learning as I find retaining of new words learn is much faster if you know how it is written.

Anybody got an effective way to start? (besides get vietnamese lady to date)

Firstly, you have to learn Vietnamese alphabets with a Vietnamese friend and master their pronunciations. Then just make friend with any Vietnamese person and communicate with them all day long.
