mệt quá = too tired, over tired

in my opinion, the difference between lắm and quá is lắm can only use after an adjective but quá can use either in front of or after an adjective.
Ex:
- Anh ta giỏi quá
- Anh ta quá giỏi
- Anh ta giỏi lắm
but not Anh ta lắm giỏi

I have an additional question:
When you use lam /qua after an adjective is there not differance in the degree , that "qua" represents a greater ( extreme degree) versus lam.?

Do both adverbs have to stay behind the adjective/ versus "rat" dep before the adjective?

I don't know the rule, "quá" and "lắm" have the same degree but I can see that between them has a bit different, but don't know where, maybe it depends on our habit
Here I have some instances
1/when describe someone
Q: Anh ta cao không? (is he tall? / how tall is he?)
A:
- Anh ta rất cao .ok
- Anh ta cao lắm .ok
- Anh ta cao quá .X
2/
Q: tại sao bạn cưới cô ta? (why did you marry her?)
A: because I love her so much
- Vì tôi yêu cô ấy quá .ok
- Vì tôi quá yêu cô ấy .ok
- Vì tôi rất yêu cô ấy .ok
- Vì tôi yêu cô ấy lắm .X
in this example you can also see that yêu is also an adjective. According my estimate, most of verbs describes a feeling is also an adjective (yêu, thích, ghét, nhớ...)
Lắm = much, many, very
rất = very, so
Quá = above, over, past, beyond, extremely, exceedingly, excessively (depends on the context, of course).
Nowadays people tend to use lắm, quá and rất as very, so. Few people realize that quá and lắm are very much different in degree, as you've put it.
As for position of adverb, consider the following sentences.
Chiếc áo này đẹp quá vs. Chiếc áo này quá đẹp. Both are correct and mean the same thing, colloquially.
This shirt is extremely beautiful vs. This shirt is beyond beautiful.
However, some people may translate a little bit differently than I do. Still, to me quá has a higher degree than lắm and rất. But I every now and then I use them interchangeably.
Chiếc áo này rất đẹp. But nobody says chiếc áo này đẹp rất.
Chiếc áo này đẹp lắm. But chiếc áo này lắm đẹp is incorrect.
I guess there is no simple rule in this case, you just have to memorize them all.

I don't know about VN4U, but I am not a language teacher, or any kind of teacher. I just happend to have a good collection of dictionaries.
