    Hi Jackie,

The translator is pretty much usless now. My guess is they are trying to improve it. Here is the translation:

Please allow me to call you "mother" because you are my mother, is it ok?
Dear mother, i love you very much! I hope you will come to my country soon. I am still studying English at the institution. Dear mother, please let me call you "mother". I haven't received anything yet. How are you doing, mother? I hope you will always be happy and loving your life. So you are learning Vietnamese by yourself? I hope we will soon meet one day.

Mother! I love you so much! I hope you'll come to my country one day, I'm still learning English at a foreign language center. Mother, give me permission to call you mother.

In Vietnam, trung tâm (so commonly translated center in VN) is usually a small school or a small teaching situation whereas institution is larger and more academic literally and figuratively
    .................................................. ....
I hope my translation, althought not perfect, help you understand the letter better.

    Hi learner,

The word "institution" has multiple meanings and its use is not limited to academic organization and buildings. I believe the one who wrote the letter is an orphan who is under care of an orphanage. Therefore, it is acceptable to translate the word "trung tam" into "institution."

    From dictionary.com
orphanage - an institution for the housing and care of orphans.

The meaning of "trung tam" that I mention is commonly used in Viet Nam, not other countries.
As you know, in VN and in VN, usually the so-called "Center" is only a small house or even a large room is rented for teaching, althought it's not always. I have see many 'centers' like that. One of my friends is the founder of a center which works in vocational teaching.

The people who wrote to Jakie , must be in VN . I guess.

So, what is the point you are trying to make here? It is wrong to use the word "institution"? It would make more sense to replace it with the word "center"?

Using of either words wouldn't cause any misunderstandings for the case here. Jackie would still understand since she is mostly likely has seen the place. I used the word "institution" because it is commonly used in America and possiblely in other English speaking countries too.

Isn't the primary goal geting the correct intented meaning translated instead of focusing on such a trivial matter.

I think you is making the thing more serious!. As a matter of fact, she/ jackie is enable to misunderstand the place where the letter's author is studying is a big, academic institution and it is similar to a university or college. Vietnam is different from the U.S. That's all.
    Happy New Lunar Year.

The author used the only word “trung tam” which means the “center” or the “institution.” He/she never said specificly if it is a “language center” or anything else. He/she assumed that the recipient knows the place he/she talked about. Therefore, it is fine to use either “the center” or “the institution” in our translation. After all, because what people posted here are private letters, we can only translate from what we read and assume the recipients knows better than us.

If you choose to use “a foreign language center” in place of “the institution,” you will cause the misunderstanding as the recipient will think the author is studying English at a place that the recipient doesn’t know.

And no, i am not trying to make thing serious. Since we are having a discussion, I am just trying to state my view.

    ~Happy New Year~ to everyone!
