Trước đây, những báo cáo về cuộc nội chiến ở Mỹ là do những người đã chiến đấu trong cuộc nội chiến ấy trực tiếp viết ra, nhưng ít có nhân chứng nào mà cho chúng ta thấy một ý tưởng sắc sảo về cuộc sống thực sự trên tiền tuyến như Stephen Crane, người sinh ra khi cuộc nội chiến đã kết thúc, tác giả cuốn the Red Badge of Courage .
