Can anyone translate the viet word "để bụng"?

In Vietnamese Dictionary, "để bụng" has 2 meanings:

-1st, "(kng.). Ghi nhớ những lời nói hay hành động sai sót nhỏ của người khác đối với mình một cách cố chấp, khó chịu".

Example: "Tính hay để bụng. Tôi nói không phải, anh đừng để bụng. Nói châm biếm thế xin phép các lãnh đạo đừng để bụng. Hay để bụng những chuyện đã qua.".

-2nd, "Giữ trong lòng không nói ra". Ex "Thương để bụng."

But I am not happy with this explanation.

I think The main reason is that Traditional Dictionary like E-V Dict only show you word for word explanation. That is it only shows you how an English word is interpreted in a Vietnamese word and vice versa.

Therefore, if you use Traditional Dictionary E-V, then you only learn superficially the word. But, you can not understand clearly and deeply the meanings of English & Vietnamese words.

In my opinion, the best way to learn Vocabulary (for translation) is practising to create the relationship between English meaning and Vietnamese meaning.

If you can do this, I am sure you can improve your translation because you can understand in depth the meanings of English word and the meanings of Vietnamese word.

de bung = keep to yourself. I checked out your website. you define de bung = take personally. I disagreed. when someone takes it personally, she/he gets offended by someone's action or behavior. de bung = when you are not happy with someone's action/behavior and you keep it to yourself or when you are happy or love someone, you keep it to yourself.

if u look for "keep to oneself" in the WordNet dictionary, u will see that it has 2 meanings:

v 1: shun the company of others; "The new student keeps to
herself"
2: withhold information; "I kept your little secreto to myself
all these years"

The second one means "giữ kín trong lòng" which is somehow similar to "để bụng". However, "keep to oneself" is more broad, u can keep secret or offence or anything to yourself.

Therefore, "để bụng" can be explained as "keep offence to oneself".

Anyway, I recorded all these Eng experience into my BraveKing dictionary.

de bung = keep offence to oneself
sounds much better than take personal. However, it won't satisfy if I said " Yeu de bung. Therefore, I would say:
de bung = keep feelings to oneself (either negative or positive feelings).
In my own experiences, vietnamese people usually use de bung as negative feelings more than positive feelings. de bung = keep offence to oneself is correct too.

if you google "don't take it personally", u'll find out there're 363,000 results relating to it.

There're 470,000 for "keep it to yourself", but majority of the results tells that this expression is often used literaly like "keep the book to yourself".

Have you ever heard people said: "I love him but I keep it to myself"
"I am so upset at her, but I keep it to myself"

I don't think I ever heard people said: " I love him and I take it personal"
or I am mad at him and I take it personal"


you would mostly heard this:
"Please calm down! I know it offensed you but please don't take it personal and blow off like that!"

if I tell you, please don't take it personal (if I tell you, please don't be mad)

Take it personal! mostly make people went mad and blow off right there. But they don't keep it to themself. sometimes they do keep it to themself but not always. in this case, it could be said de bung = take it personal. But it is not right completely because de bung has more meaning than that.

be dung= (always there inside of you)---keep it to yourself

OK, now, everyone agree that "để bụng" in Vietnamese has 2 meanings:

I didn't say that "take personally" covers both meanings. If u look at "take personally" in BraveKing dictionary, you can only see it links to the 2nd meaning of "để bụng".

Therefore, the sentence "I love him and I take it personal" will be wrong.

Second, "take personally" is often used in negative sentence like "Please calm down! I know it offensed you but please don't take it personally".

Third, "take personally" is much softer than "mad". Once time, one of my Aussie friends tell me that "don't take it personally" when I told her that "some company values ur skill through ur English accent". It had no thing relating to "mad" or "go crazy" here.

Forth, I tried to search "take personally" in variety of dictionary but useless. No dictionary ever mentioned that phrase. I only found its meaning in a blog page that somehow talks about "take personally".

So, pls don't take personally what I said Right: xin đừng để bụng những gì tôi nói nhé.
