Hussein's prison diaries expose fear of diseases

CAIRO, Egypt – Saddam Hussein feared catching AIDS or other diseases during his U.S.-supervised captivity, a leading Arab newspaper said yesterday in publishing excerpts of his prison writings.

Advertisement The London-based Al-Hayat said the comments came in portions of Hussein's prison diaries it obtained from U.S. authorities. The U.S. military confirmed some of the late Iraqi leader's writings had been released.
When Hussein found out U.S. military guards also were using his laundry line to dry clothes, he wrote that he demanded they stop, according to the excerpts.

“I explained to them that they are young and they could have young people's diseases,” Hussein wrote. “My main concern was to not catch a venereal disease, an HIV disease, in this place.”

He said some soldiers ignored his request.

American soldiers captured Hussein on Dec. 13, 2003, eight months after his regime was toppled by a U.S.-led invasion. An Iraqi tribunal convicted him of crimes against humanity, and he was hanged in 2006

Villagers' ears cut off to serve as warning

ZIGUINCHOR, Senegal – A group of armed men rounded up about 20 villagers in the restive southern Casamance region and sliced off their left ears with machetes before releasing them, villagers and officials said yesterday.

Wednesday's gruesome attack was apparently a warning to keep villagers from harvesting lucrative cashew nuts from trees in the area, victims said.

LONGVIEW, Wash. – A locksmith has managed to open a 159-year-old safe from Oregon that baffled other safecrackers and an expert from MIT.

In 2½ hours, Tom Gorham of Longview got the safe open last week by spinning the dial and feeling for grooves to get the combination, a technique called manipulation.

Gorham trekked to Astoria, Ore., a town about 40 miles west of Longview and 70 miles northwest of Portland, to try his luck with the 1-ton safe found during renovation at a cannery there. Gorham and his wife, Kelly, also a locksmith, asked to try after watching a television report on unsuccessful attempts to open the safe. Cannery owner Floyd Holcomb won't reveal what was inside until he tells the cannery's board next month, Kelly Gorham said.

suggestion: grooves trong khoá số thì nên được dịch là "răng" thì đúng hơn. Lý do là những ổ khoá số dùng bánh quay số giống như "líp" xe đạp. Khi mình kéo ổ khoá "hơi" căng một chút thì ngàm khoá sẽ chạm vào răng và mình có thể nghe/cảm thấy nó kêu lịch kịch bên trong khi mình quay núm số.
