Where We Live and Work (Nơi Chúng Ta Làm Việc và Sinh Sống)

It’s Fall now where we live. It is hard to believe since Summer was just here, when it was sunny and quite hot, when the subdivision’s swimming pool was full of kids running around screaming and splashing water on each other while their older sisters and mothers were sunbathing in brightly-colored and revealing swimsuits. It seems like it was just now that the mother deer and their babies came out of the woods surrounding the area, leisurely grazing on our flowers and plants and on our neighbors’. Several kinds of birds of different sizes and colors were actively poking around for worms in the lawn as little brown rabbits dashed in and out of the bushes.
(Bây giờ là mùa Thu nơi chúng tôi cư ngụ. Thật là khó tin vì mùa Hè vừa mới đây, khi trời nắng nôi và nóng bức, khi hồ tắm trong khu đầy con nít chạy vòng vòng la hét tạt nước lẫn nhau trong lúc mấy bà chị và mẹ chúng tắm nắng trong những áo tắm rực màu và lộ liễu. Dường như vừa mới đây những con nai mẹ và nai con chui ra từ những cụm rừng thưa xung quanh khu nhà, ung dung nhấm nháp hoa và cây cỏ của chúng tôi và của hàng xóm. Các loại chim chóc nhiều cỡ và khác màu tích cực mổ mổ tìm giun trong sân cỏ trong khi mấy chú thỏ nâu be bé phóng ra vào các bụi cây.)

But it’s definitely getting colder now, especially at night. The leaves in the woods in the back of our house are changing their colors; some are still green but most have turned red, yellow, rust, and many shades in between. When the sun shines on them, their colors light up the whole area with a golden effulgence, as if some divine being has descended. Each time a strong wind blows, thousands of leaves rustle, dancing almost in unison. Amid this fluttering tapestry of colors many leaves fall, drifting gently on their way back to earth.
(Nhưng bây giờ rõ là trời trở lạnh hơn, nhất là về đêm. Lá cây từ cụm rừng sau nhà đang đổi màu, một số còn xanh nhưng phần lớn đã ngả vàng, đỏ, xét rỉ, và nhiều sắc thái ở giữa. Khi ánh nắng chiếu vào những lá cây, cả một vùng rực sáng ánh vàng như thể một đấng thần linh nào vừa giáng xuống. Mỗi lần một cơn gió mạnh thổi qua, hàng ngàn chiếc lá xào xạc nhảy múa gần như cùng lúc. Giữa bức màn đầy màu sắc rung rinh, nhiều lá rơi, phất phơ nhẹ nhàng trên đường về lại đất.)

I am often reminded of the Vietnamese poem Lưu Nguyễn’s Departure from Heaven:

Very soon the winter will come with its snow, ice, and chilling wind. But for now the task at hand for the next few weekends is to gather the leaves and stuff them into big plastic bags, then place them in front of the house for pickup by the city truck. Leaves and other yard waste such as grass clippings and small tree branches are transported by the truck to a center where they are composted to make mulch for planting.
