A certain characteristic in a large population has a distribution that is symmetric about the mean M. If 68 percent of the distribution lies within one standard deviation D of the mean, what percent of the distribution is less than M+D?

This is an usual statistical problem.
Solution:
"68 percent of the distribution lies within one standard deviation D of the mean" means that between M-D and M+D it has 68 %, so between M and D percent of the distribution is 34 %.
From the normalization condition of the distribution function we have the percent of distribution betweet -OO and OO = 100%. Due to the symmetric of the distribution, the percent of the distribution from -OO to D = 50%.
So, the percent of the distribution is less than M+D:
50% + 34% = 84%.

Why are you interested in this question of GMAT? Not only english is required to understand this question but also mathematic and statistical physics. If you are not going to be master in these field, you needn't to get more headache with this question any more. Cheers.

À, thực ra mình cũng chỉ tò mò thôi . Đề này cũng là của thằng bạn chứ mình đang học phương trình hàm thấy nó cũng đủ đau đầu rồi, chẳng cần thêm món "mathematic and statistical physics" này làm j`. Theo mình hiểu thì bạn có ý định (hoặc đã) trở thành "master in "those" field" phải ko?
