Help with "to be" in sentence please.
Im starting to figure out "to be" and need to get over this learning hump.
1. My house is red.
2. My house is not red.
3. The movie is over.
4. The dog is not a human.
Im working hard at this. It will come. I just need to keeep focussed. have a nice day.
in this case, all of "to be" can be omitted when you translate into Vietnamese:
1. Nhà của tôi màu đỏ. (tobe is omitted)
2. Nhà của tôi không phải màu đỏ (tobe is omitted)
3. Hết phim (tobe is omitted)
4. Con chó này không phải là người
Là is never used preceding (before) an adjective or adverb, except in certain cases. Take this one for example:
Anh ấy thông minh - He is smart
Anh ấy rất (là) thông minh - He is very smart.
This is because adjectives can function likes verbs. Thông minh (smart) functions like 'to be smart'.
Là is used before nouns.
Tôi là học sinh/sinh viên - I am a student
Tôi là người Việt Nam - I am (a) Vietnamese
Người means person/people and as such is a noun.
Anh ấy là ai? - Who is he?
Anh ấy dễ thương không? - Is he cute?
