Default Best way to address strangers

So if I'm around 20 years old and female, and I meet a man the same age, it would be proper to address him as anh, correct? But if we became friends and the relationship became more informal, ba.n would be appropriate, no?

    Thanks

Yes, it's right to address him as "anh" ,and then if you became friends you can address each other by name or more informally by "ông-bà", "cậu-tớ" ..ect ...
"Bạn" is rather used impolitely in such situations in which you know each other but two of you are not too "closed" or not "closed" enough to change the way to call
Another situation in which we can use "bạn" is when we dont know the person who we are writing to, eg: in Vdict, we all use Bạn as a way to address another, politely and friendly
Sorry if my eng makes you hard to understand or misunderstand sth....
Anyway, hope that this will help you

let's say i am 33 years old, and i'm talking to a man who is around 50....he's not quite old enough to be my father, but he's not exactly my peer, either. How should I address him? Anh? Bac? Chu?

    "anh" or "chú"
I think "chú" is the best choice if you have a normal relationship with him, "anh" seems to be a too intimate word
