    Default A difficult translation!

    Hi all,

I've tried to get a translation for the word 'sociopath' but it doesn't seem to appear in any dictionary or Vdict.

    Cheers

Thanks but I think that defintion is for a pschopath which is not the same thing. A sociopath rarely gets into trouble with the police and is characterised by being very charming but very deceptive. These skills are used to manipulate the victim into giving the sociopath what they want.

It looks like your denifinition of a sociopath was taken from Hollywood CSI, Without a trace, Criminal Mind or Bones. I didn't know that these American series can be watched in Hanoi.

So what do you think of this denifition of sociopath taken from Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary 8th Edition ?

Sociopath = A person who has mental illness and who behaves in an aggressive or dangerous way towards other people.

The definition is too short and a distinction between a psychopath a sociopath is made here

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_th...s_a_Pyschopath

As you can see some analysts do not make a distinction between the two.

I guess so, that's why they are categorised into different groups. My point is they all suffered from antisocial personality disorder (APD) with different abilities and capabilities, like the rest of us, some are musicians while others are mathematicians.

In the Vietnamese Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, APD = Nhân Cách Chống Đối Xã Hội.

    Many thanks.

That definition certainly covers the spectrum for this type of personality disorder. I think it's always best to refer to a specialist dictionary when faced with a specialist translation.
