I just started studying Vietnamese. It seems like rather simple words are not appearing in Vdict dictionary. For example, "America" and "Đạ" Both these words appear in the first chapter of my book, but are not in the dictionary. Why is that?

I think you should ask your Vietnamese teacher or read it again .
Mỹ: (adj) đẹp
- fair, beautiful ; (handsome, đẹp trai; pretty, đẹp gái; mỹ nhân, beautiful person; mỹ nữ, beautiful girl)
Mỹ: (n)
- cái đẹp; nhan sắc, beauty
- mỹ thuật, act
- America, American
Mỹ mãn (rare) be satisfied
Dạ: (interjection) yes (to use it when we say with older people or superior)
Dạ: (n) ( lòng dạ) heart, in one's heart;
Dạ: (n) felt (a kind of cloth)
Dạ: (n) (rare) night (Chinese-Vietnam language)
Dạ: Units of weights and measures of the West region of Vietnam people. It's about 0.1 metre block.
If we couple this two words together we'll have "mỹ dạ". It means kindness or kindheart.
Good luck!
I don't like English, I hate foreign language My English is very "banana" But I must use it So i want to learn English and I can teach Vietnamese for who need it
my Y!M: chau_truong_sinh

Examples of "phải không":Thank you very much, Livelong. Does "Dạ Không" mean "yes" or "no" (if in response to a "phải kh̀̉ông" question)?
_ It is a beautiful day, isn't it? Hôm nay là một ngày đẹp trời, phải không (or "không phải sao")?
_ You did it, didn't you? Là mày làm, phải không?
"Dạ" here doesn't mean anything. It is more like an expression. "Dạ phải", "dạ không", "dạ vâng", "dạ đúng", "dạ, chào ông", "dạ thưa bà" ... When "Dạ" is used, it shows your respectful attitude towards somebody, or it is simply a polite way to say things.
Sometimes, "dạ" is considered as a confirmation:
_ Are you a student? Dạ (yes, I am a student)
_ He didn't go to school, did he? Dạ (your saying is correct, he didn't go to school)
to Jama .
I think it because the Viet_English in Vdict hasn't been perfect yet , so if you have anything that needed you can post your quest in here . There are some expert people as Sang56, Livelong or Trunnie .... they will help you out. Have a great Vietnamese Learning.( fix me if you see my Enghlish got wrong, my thanks)
