To S or not to S

Trong tiếng anh khi nói về số nhiều thì thường thêm chữ "s" hoặc "es". Chẳng hạn như: cats, glasses.

Tuy nhiên có một số danh từ khi nói về số nhiều thì không nên thêm "s" hoặc "es".

Đó là những chữ nào?

foot -> feet
tooth -> teeth
leaf -> leaves
police -> police
người của 1 quốc gia nào đó ( ví dụ : a vietnamese -> vietnamese ) (?)

Những chữ đó đúng thật. Tôi quên nói luôn là những chữ mà tôi nghĩ đến cũng không cần đỏi cách viết. Một thí dụ thôi: fish, không nên thêm "es". Phải nói "I caught 3 fish" not "I caught 3 fishes".

Còn police thì không tính vì chữ đó nói về cảnh sát nói chung. Vị cảnh sát thì là policeman, hoặc số nhiều thì policemen.

Vậy có chữ nào khác giống "fish"?

Those words end with f, h, o, s, x, y

f will turn into ves. Ex: one wolf but two wolves.

h will turn into hes. Ex: one watch but two watches. or I watch but she watches.

o will become oes. I go but she goes. But one condo and two condos, one radio two radios.

s will be ses. one boss two bosses. But plural of focus is focuses or foci. Same as radiuses/radii.

x will be xes. One fox but two foxes. I box and he boxes.

y will be ies only if it does not follow a vowel. One key two keys but one pony and two ponies.

Exception to the rule:

one wife but two wives.

I caught two fish. Same type of fish
I caught two fishes. Two different species of fish.
