Thường thì nên có thêm chữ "should", nhưng đây là một cách nói gọi là "subjunctive" dùng để nhấn mạnh điều gì (như ra lệnh) hay diễn tả một ước mong, cái gì không nhất định, sự giả thử.

Trong "Present subjunctive" thi động từ để nguyên thể, không chia thì hay ngôi thứ. Thí dụ:

I demand that you be here on time.
It is important that he take every precaution. (not he takes or he should take)

Past Subjuctive: tất cả động từ dùng thì quá khứ (past tense) như bình thường trừ "to be" thành "were". Thí dụ:

I wish I were there with you.
He cried as if he were being killed
Her parents wish she were studying hard.

I wish I knew. (simple past)
I wish I had done well in the exam. (past perfect)
